Amazon product image requirements: a practical seller’s guide

Understand Amazon’s main-image rules, white backgrounds, pixel dimensions and category exceptions, then prepare a dependable export workflow.

A strong Amazon listing begins with a photograph that makes the exact product easy to understand. The first image has a specific job: show what the customer receives, clearly enough to work both as a search thumbnail and a larger product view.

Use this guide to prepare your source photo, check the main image and build a useful supporting gallery. The linked Amazon guidance is the authority for your marketplace and category; the workflow recommendations below are practical production choices.

At a glance

  • Use a pure white background for the standard MAIN image: RGB 255, 255, 255.
  • Keep the complete product visible and accurately show the included quantity and accessories.
  • Start with a sharp, high-resolution original and check category guidance before exporting.

What belongs in the main image

Amazon’s general MAIN rules call for an accurate product photograph, a white background, the entire product in frame and approximately 85% product coverage. Extra text, promotional graphics and accessories outside the offer can create compliance problems. Review the complete requirements and relevant category instructions before publishing. Translate that into a simple set-up. Photograph the actual sellable configuration. If the customer receives a single bottle, make that bottle the subject. If the offer is a set, arrange the included pieces so the quantity is readable without making one piece appear disproportionately large. Keep styling objects for supporting photos when your category permits them.

Choose useful pixel dimensions

Amazon’s published image-team guidance describes a 500–10,000-pixel range on the longest side and a preference for more than 1,000 pixels for zoom. A sharp 2,000 × 2,000-pixel square is a practical working export for many products; that is our production suggestion, rather than a universal required size. Check how many pixels remain after cropping. A 4,000-pixel original with a tiny product in its center may produce a much smaller useful image. Moving closer while shooting usually gives you a better source than enlarging a small crop later. A square canvas also does not require a square product: preserve its proportions and position it comfortably within the frame.

Make the background white without losing the product

A photographed white sweep often looks gray once the product is exposed correctly. Keep exposure decisions focused on the product first, then separate the background during editing. Raising the brightness of the whole photograph until the background clips can erase pale labels, fabric texture and glossy highlights.

After placing the subject on white, examine the outline at 100% zoom. Look for a dark rim around pale packaging, missing straps, translucent areas that became solid and little islands of the old background between handles. Check a few empty background pixels with a color sampler, while allowing the product itself to retain its natural shades and detail.

Check the exceptions before setting a house style

Clothing, jewelry, books, furniture and other categories can have additional image instructions. Treat a general checklist as the beginning of the review. Open the style guidance attached to the product type you actually sell, including any model, packaging or composition instructions, and record that link beside your export preset.

This matters particularly when reusing a catalog across countries or changing categories. An image accepted on one detail page is weak evidence that the same framing fits every other listing. Keep an editable master so you can adjust the canvas, visible pieces or image sequence without starting the shoot again.

Review the actual listing after upload

Open the completed listing on a phone and a desktop. Check the search-sized thumbnail first, then the full gallery and any zoom view. Confirm that a selected variation shows the matching color and that the photographed quantity agrees with the title and offer.

If an image is rejected or suppressed, capture the exact message and identify whether the problem concerns content, dimensions, processing or the category. Change one issue at a time and keep the accepted export. Background removal helps prepare the asset; the seller’s final listing review establishes whether it meets the complete rules.
