Etsy listing photo sizes and crops that keep your product visible

Understand Etsy’s 2,000-pixel recommendation, thumbnail framing, color profiles and transparent-image limitations before publishing.

Etsy photos have to work in several shapes. A carefully composed full photograph can become a tight thumbnail in search, a different crop in a recommendation and a larger view on the listing page.

The practical goal is to supply enough genuine image detail and enough space around the subject that those views all make sense. Begin with the finished item, then build the framing and export around it.

At a glance

  • Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels in both dimensions for listing photos.
  • Keep the product centered with room for thumbnail cropping; preview the crop in Etsy.
  • Flatten transparency onto an intentional background before uploading.

Separate the recommended size from a square crop

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and tall. It also advises at least 635 pixels in each dimension for the first photo to avoid lower search placement. These numbers do not establish a mandatory square aspect ratio. Etsy image requirements and best practices.

For a landscape composition, 3,000 × 2,400 pixels is one possible working export when the source genuinely contains that much detail. Treat it as an example preset, not an Etsy requirement. A small source enlarged to that canvas still contains the limitations of the small source. Move closer during the shoot or use a higher-resolution original when fine craftsmanship becomes hard to see.

Compose for the thumbnail as well as the full photo

Etsy recommends a horizontal or square first image and provides a thumbnail adjustment tool. Its help also encourages room for square, portrait and landscape crops. Preview those views using the actual listing controls. Etsy image requirements and best practices.

Imagine a handmade necklace arranged across a wide table. The full photograph may look elegant, but a central crop can remove the clasp and both ends. Move the essential product closer to the middle, reduce the visual importance of the surrounding props and leave a little margin beyond the pieces you need buyers to see.

  • Keep the item’s identifying feature near the central area.
  • Leave breathing room around handles, fringe, straps and other projections.
  • Check that a tight thumbnail still reads as the correct type of item.
  • Use consistent framing across a collection when the products have similar shapes.

Choose a background that serves the material

A plain white background is useful for a consistent catalog and for revealing shape. A restrained textured surface can help explain the character of handmade work. Choose it deliberately: the product should remain the clearest part of the frame, with enough contrast for pale edges or fine thread.

Separate the first image from the rest of the story. A clear product view can lead into a close-up of the surface, a scale view, a process detail and a relevant use scene. Photograph the version being sold. If a prop appears, make the listing’s contents clear so the image does not create confusion about what arrives.

Flatten transparency before the final upload

Etsy’s help says transparent PNG images are unsupported and transparent areas may appear black. It recommends sRGB for predictable web color and warns that larger files can upload slowly. A white-background JPEG is a practical choice for an opaque product photograph. Etsy image requirements and best practices.

If you remove a background, keep the transparent cutout as an editing master and make a separate flattened listing file. Open that flattened file in an image viewer before uploading. A checkerboard in an editor represents transparency; it does not mean the file contains the white canvas you intend the buyer to see.

Look closely at lace, glass, sheer cloth and pale paper. These materials often need more careful edge review because their appearance depends on the original background and light passing through them. Compare against the original photo and select a different image when the result misrepresents the material.

Check the saved listing on a smaller screen

Publish or preview the saved listing, then inspect it at phone size. Confirm that the main photo is still recognizable, the thumbnail crop retains important parts and the image order tells a useful story. Check the selected option against the relevant photos.

If the exported image looks softer online, compare the larger view before changing it. Platforms create their own display versions. Keep the original master and change one export setting at a time, so you can tell whether the issue comes from the source, the crop, compression or the displayed size.
